On the Greek Goldsmiths Avenue

The“Epirus”Collection takes you to one of the major centres of neo-Hellenic jewellery production where the Islamic love for vegetal patterns and flowers co-existed with the Greek Baroque. Ιn the mountainous village of Kalarites, birthplace of many famous artisans, most of the inhabitants were“chrysikoi”(goldsmiths, although they never worked with solid gold) and the sound of the hammer on the anvil boomed throughout the village. They used humble materials for creating voluminous and complex jewels enriched with chains and coins. The use of coins in jewellery served a practical purpose, as a way of saving money. However, Epirotic jewellery’s beauty was not defined by its material value.
